Through to the semi-final on penalties!
Girondines' cup campaign rolls on
COUPE DE FRANCE FéMININE - Saturday, February 15, 2020 - 15:32
Montpellier, 14:24. MHSC lead Bordeaux 3-1 in the Coupe de France quarter final, and goalkeeper Cindy Perrault has just saved a penalty taken by Viviane Asseyi. The Girondines look destined to crash out of the cup, despite taking an early lead courtesy of Ouleymata Sarr (1-0, 13'). Montpellier equalised from one corner (1-1, 31'), then took the lead from another (1-2, 40').
As if that wasn't enough, Bordeau lost captain Sophie Istillart to injury just before half-time, then conceded a third goal immediately after the break (1-3, 47').
The rest was a warning to all future adversaries: never underestimate the physical and mental strength of the Girondines! Substitutes Maëlle Garbino and Emelyne Laurent led the charge against the Montpellier defence, side by side with the tireless Ouleymata Sarr.
In the 78th minute the French international latched onto a ball from Viviane Asseyi to score Bordeaux's second goal, reducing the hosts' lead to 3-2. The crowd were barely back in their seats when Sarr pounced again in the 80th minute, pulling the Girondines level (3-3). Bordeaux threw everything they had at the MHSC defence in search of a winner, with Khadija Shaw dribbling three defenders only to see her shot stopped by the keeper (83'). Back at the other end, Romane Bruneau produced a fantastic save to stop a free kick from Landeka (86'). In the final seconds of the 90 minutes, Vanessa Gilles pulled off a crucial tackle to take the ball away from Petermann (90+2).
Once again the Girondines' fate hung on a penalty shoot-out, and once again their performance was flawless. But Montpellier also scored all five! Sudden death beckoned. Andréa Lardez didn't crack under the pressure. And nor did Romane Bruneau, who pulled off a spectacular diving save to parry Mondésir's shot and seal qualification for the semi-finals!
For the first time in history, the Girondines will feature in the Coupe de France semi-finals on the weekend of 22nd March!
