Our Coaches

A highly-trained and experienced team

Find out more about the coaches here in Bordeaux, whose skills and experience help shape the progress of our young trainees.

Patrick Battiston

Academy Director

Director of the Academy since 2001, Patrick Battiston also coached the Girondins' reserve team for many years. His highly successful playing career for club and country helped forge the values which he now shares with the Club's trainees: sporting excellence combined with team spirit. He is a firm believer in discipline, hard work and application, without ever forgetting the importance of enjoying the game.

Philippe Lucas

Coach of the Elite squad and National 3 side

As a professional footballer, Philippe was an intelligent and hard-working presence in midfield for Guingamp, Sochaux and Bordeaux. He featured in the Girondins team which reached the UEFA Cup final (against Bayern Munich in 1996). After hanging up his boots Philippe naturally moved into coaching. His U19 team won the Coupe Gambardella in 2013, and Philippe now coaches the National 3 (formerly CFA 2) squad as well as working with the Elite squad at the training centre.

Matthieu Chalmé

Assistant Coach, National 3

A former professional and a graduate of the Academy at Le Haillan, Matthieu Chalmé made his professional debut as a right back for Libourne Saint-Seurin. He spent five seasons in Lille before returning to Bordeaux, where he was part of the team that won the Ligue 1 Championship (2009), the League Cup (2009) and two Trophées des Champions (2008 et 2009). After a few years spent learning the ropes of professional coaching, he is now Philippe Lucas' deputy with the reserve side.

Jean-Luc Dogon

National U19 Coach

From Laval to Rennes via Bordeaux, Matra-Racing and Strasbourg (not to mention a spell with the French national team), Jean-Luc Dogon enjoyed an impressive professional career in the 1980s and 1990s. He puts this priceless experience to good use in his work with the club's National U19 side. Hard work which paid off when the U19s were crowned French champions in 2017.

Pierre Espanol

Assistant Coach, National U19

Pierre has enjoyed a long and varied career in professional football, first as a player and later as youth coach, first team coach and scout for the Girondins. Pierre now takes charge of training sessions for our 'Elite' players, the most promising members of the Academy selected on the basis of their performance on the pitch and in the classroom. This mixed-age group assembles for specialised training sessions.

André Penalva

National U17 Coach

André Penalva is Head Coach of the Girondins' National U17 side. He draws upon his own experience as a professional footballer (Beauvais, Châteauroux, Bordeaux B, Béziers) to instil his young charges with technical know-how and an insatiable desire to win, a crucial requirement to succeed at the highest level. André is an expert in getting the best from young players, and has taken several teams to the national play-offs.

Marius Trésor

Widely considered to be one of the finest defenders in the history of French football, Marius Trésor won 65 caps for France. He is now Assistant Coach to the reserve team alongside Patrick Battiston, providing our younger players with priceless advice on how to behave professionally on and off the pitch.

Pierrot Labat

Driven by an undying passion for football, Pierrot Labat has been a Girondins coach for many years. He teaches young players (and sometimes seasoned professionals) the fundamentals of the game, working with footballers all over the world.

Jean-Jacques Gresser
