Otávio is on his way to Bordeaux! The Brazilian defensive midfielder joins us from Atletico Paranaense, signing a four-year contract with the Girondins. Bemvindo Otávio!

The Girondins de Bordeaux are delighted to announce that Otávio has joined our club from Atletico Paranaense (Brazil). After completing the compulsory medical examination, the player put pen to paper on a four-year deal this morning. He will be a Bordeaux player until June 2021.

Born on 4th May 1994 in Maceio, Brazil, Otávio is a 23 year-old defensive midfielder. He has spent his whole career thus far with Paranaense, starting out playing futsal as a boy, like many Brazilian stars.

After making his way up through the youth teams, he turned professional in 2014 at the age of 20. His Brasileirão debut came against Gremio, and his first start against Cruzeiro. He made 17 league appearances in his maiden season, starting 11 games.

Next season was better still, as Otávio succeeded in imposing himself as first-choice midfielder and played 32 games in the league and 6 in the Copa Sudamericana. He was by now firmly established as an essential player for the Coritiba-based club.

Since then Otávio’s career has continued on its upward trajectory, and in 2016 he discovered the prestigious Copa Libertadores (the South American answer to the Champions League), playing in 10 games. He also continued to shine in the league, taking his career total to 90 appearances in the Brasileirão (2 goals) and 16 in continental cup competitions.

Otávio also won his first silverware with his boyhood club. With the youth side he won the Yokohama Cup (an U19 tournament held in Germany) in 2012 and 2013. With the first side, he won the Parana state championships in 2016 – the first time Atletico Paranaense had lifted the trophy since 2009!

Otávio joins the Girondins determined to take his career to the next level. He is a defensive midfielder with a proven gift for winning the ball, as well as a precise passing technique. We are delighted to have secured the services of this talented young player for the next four seasons, and we wish him all the best in the legendary navy blue and white.
