A cruel defeat! [0-1]
Girondins scuppered by a late Saint-Etienne goal.
Sometimes the fate of a match can hang on the smallest of things. Just one decision. In this case the decision taken by referee Mr. Buquet. Despite a strong performance, the Girondins slipped to a 1-0 defeat thanks to a last gasp goal from the visitors.
The 25,976 supporters who made it to the Matmut Atlantique were probably hoping for something to brighten up this grey Sunday afternoon. The Girondins put in a solid performance here, often outplaying high-flying Saint-Etienne. But when Mr. Buquet pointed to the penalty spot in stoppage time, Bouanga slammed the spot-kick home to leave Bordeaux ruing their missed opportunities.
And yet, Bordeaux had looked the better team for much of this game. Yacine Adli (30’) andHwang Ui-Jo (twice: 67’, 80’) both drew excellent saves from Ruffier. The visitors' keeper was the only thing standing between the Girondins and an inevitable goal - which somehow never materialised.
The Girondins suffered another setback in the 23rd minute, when Laurent Koscielny limped off injured and was replaced by Vukasin Jovanovic. The Girondins looked serious and disciplined throughout, but when Hwang Ui-Jo connected with a Jimmy Briand cross to finally find the net his goal was ruled offside.
Football can be a cruel mistress sometimes, and this afternoon that was certainly the case. A bitter pill to swallow for the Girondins.
