Girondins earn a precious point in Lyon [1-1]
Jimmy Briand got the equaliser in a thrilling game
The Girondins fought hard to earn a vital point from a tough away trip to Lyon (1-1). Bordeaux were tactically sound and battled constantly in midfield to shut down the hosts' attacking intentions. Depay put Lyon ahead in the first half (31'), but the Girondins refused to be beaten. Their hard work paid off after a red card for Thiago Mendes reduced OL to 10 men (62'). Jimmy Briand fired in the equaliser in the 67th minute.
Jimmy Briand's brief celebration after knocking in the equalising goal spoke volumes about the rigour and determination with which the Girondins approached this game. OL keeper Lopes was on strong form throughout, but he was powerless to stop Jimmy's volley (67', 1-1), which came after a long spell of Bordeaux domination.
An impressive team performance saw Bordeaux take home a point from this notoriously difficult away game, taking our tally to 5. The boys in blue refused to be discouraged by Depay's first-half goal, and kept on battling until their fortunes turned around.
At the other end, Benoît Costil made some fantastic saves to deny Aouar (8') and Terrier (22'). Nicolas De Préville was a constant menace in the Lyon half, and Hwang Ui Jo (46'), Mexer (64') and Samuel Kalu (70') all came tantalisingly close to making this a famous victory for Bordeaux.
Ultimately it was the sending off of Thiago Mendes (for two well-earned yellow cards) which marked the turning point in this match, allowing Bordeaux to finally find an opening in the OL defence. This was a serious, dedicated performance from the Girondins, and one which bodes well for the future.
