Toma Basic fires Bordeaux to victory [0-1]
Girondins through to quarter-finals of the League Cup
Bordeaux travelled east to face Dijon in the BKT League Cup this evening. Eric Bédouet's side won by the narrowest of margins, courtesy of a goal from Toma Basic (0-1).
Bordeaux certainly put in the work against Dijon, and yet chances were few and far between in the first half. The three "K"s (Karamoh, Kamano, Kalu) were struggling to slip into gear.
It wasn't until the 36th minute that things started to get interesting. Runarson tipped away from Samuel Kalu, only for the ball to fall into the path of Yann Karamoh. Unmarked on the edge of the six yard box, he somehow put his shot over the bar.
Neither side really threatened in this first half, and the game remained goalless at the break. But Dijon returned to the field with renewed ambition, and rapidly created goalscoring opportunities courtesy of Saïd (52') and Balmont (58').
Then, in the 66th minute, the game took a different turn. A floated cross found Jaroslav Plasil waiting in the middle, and Jaro headed the ball down for Toma Basic. The Croat controlled the ball, lined up his shot and left the Dijon keeper flailing helplessly (0-1).
Dijon tried their best to come back, but to no avail. A communication mix-up between Jules Koundé and Gaëtan Poussin handed the hosts one last chance (92') but the goalkeeper, starting for the first time this evening, recovered to clear the danger. Bordeaux march on to the quarter-finals
