A tough start to the group stage (0-1)

Bordeaux beaten 1-0 at Prague's Eden Arena

The Girondins travelled to the Czerch Republic for their first match of the UEFA Europa League group stage, against Slavia Prague.

Slavia Prague got off to a quick start, rapidly seizing possession and stamping their authority on the game. Bordeaux attempted to hold their ground, testing their hosts from a set piece which saw Jules Koundé narrowly miss the target with a headed effort from Jaroslav Plasil's cross (13').

Prague were much more attack-focused, and created a series of chances. In the 17th minute, Husbauer hooked his shot just wide of the post. Two minutes later, Traoré grazed the crossbar with an acrobatic aerial effort.

Slavia finally took the lead in the 35th minute. Husbauer picked out Zmrhal iin the penalty area, and his powerful left-footed shot into the corner left Benoît Costil stranded (1-0).

The Girondins came back from the break determined to overturn the deficit, and produced some good spells of play in the middle and down the right wing. But despite their best efforts, Bordeaux's triple-pronged attack could not find a way through the Czech defence.

Slavia twice came close to making it 2-0, but Benoît Costil held firm under pressure. In the 73d minute he turned away Soucek's header with a superb snap save. Seven minutes later Zmrhal fired on goal from close range, but Costil somehow managed to get the ball away.

Bordeaux left the Eden Arena with nothing to show for their efforts, but they'll need to swallow that disappointment and focus their full attention on this Sunday's Ligue 1 game against Guingamp
