Bordeaux slip up against Montpellier [2-1]
Postponed game ends in defeat
Edging into the lead just after half time, Montpellier protected their slender advantage despite a late attacking onslaught from the Girondins. Bordeaux slipped to a rare home defeat at the Matmut ATLANTIQUE.
And yet, and yet... Bordeaux dominated possession for much of this match, and made their attacking intentions clear early on when Nicolas De Préville linked up with a clever ball from Yann Karamoh, but failed to get past Lecomte (9’).
Montpellier were seemingly content to play deep and wait for opportunities to counter-attack. A winning tactic, since their first real venture into the Girondins' half resulted in their first goal when Lasne headed past Benoît Costil from close range (20’, 0-1).
It took Bordeaux fifteen minutes to respond. Yann Karamoh embarked upon a mazy, dribbling run before hooking the ball back for Nicolas De Préville. NDP shot for goal, Toma Basic intervened and tipped the ball into the net (35’, 1-1).
Shortly after the break the Girondins were caught napping. Montpellier won a corner, which Mollet laid off for Congré who promptly fired the visitors back into the lead (50, 1-2).
Bordeaux pushed hard to get back on the level, piling up attacking movements and hopeful crosses into the box. Jules Koundé was a constant menace, and came close with a crisp shot from outside the box which Lecomte did very well to stop (74’). A few minutes later Nicolas De Préville saw his shot scrape off the wrong side of the post (79’), a fate which also befell Maxime Poundjé's powerful late drive (90’).
Bordeaux kept on pushing until the bitter end, but ultimately their efforts were all in vain. Montpellier 2 - 1 Bordeaux at the Matmut ATLANTIQUE.
