Disappointment in Nantes [1-0]
100th league meeting ends in defeat
Thanks to a Nicolas Pallois volley early in the second half, Nantes won the Atlantic Derby by the narrowest of margins.
The Canaries dominated possession in the first half but created little in the way of goalscoring opportunities, with the exception of a decent shot from Limbombe which Benoît Costil did well to catch (10’). The Bordeaux back line was vigilant, with Vukasin Jovanovic producing some particularly incisive tackles (25’ and 34’).
The Girondins gave the Stade de la Beaujoire a scare early on, when Toma Basic fired off a surprise shot from 20 yards out. Wide of the mark (9’).
There was still all to play for in the second half, and Nantes soon made the decisive move. A corner found Pallois unmarked at the back post, and he smashed his volley past Benoît Costil and into the back of the net (52’, 1-0 to Nantes).
It took all of Benoît Costil's skill and concentration to keep Bordeaux in the game, as he blocked shots from Waris (64’), Khrin (79’) and Waris again, the latter from close range (80’). Costil produced yet another spectacular save to win a one-on-one with Moutoussamy and keep the Girondins' slim hopes alive (88).
But it was not to be: Bordeaux could not find the net, and finished the afternoon 1-0 losers at Nantes' Stade de la Beaujoire.
It's back to Bordeaux later this week, where the Girondins face Montpellier at the Matmut ATLANTIQUE, this Friday 1st March at 20:45.
