A victory for Emi [2-1]
Girondins emerge victorious in the Garonne Derby, marked by a moving tribute to Emiliano Sala.
The Matmut Atlantique came to a standstill to pay tribute to Emiliano Sala in the 9th minute. A moving moment in a derby which Bordeaux won by 2 goals to 1. Toma Basic (2') and Jimmy Briand (82') got the goals for the Girondins, brushing off Cahuzac's equaliser (69').
9. In the 9th minute of this game, time stood still. An homage launched by the Virage Sud, as if descending from the sky. The whole stadium rose as one, the match came to a standstill. A massive wave of applause swept the Matmut in honour of Emiliano Sala. "Emi Forever," read the banner. Forever in our hearts.
Meanwhile, on the pitch, things were going well for the Girondins. Toma Basic handed Bordeaux the lead in just the 2nd minute, with a diving header at the back post. They kept that lead until the 69th minute, when Cahuzac nabbed an equaliser (1-1).
On this fine February afternoon, with the sun shining down, Bordeaux served up a reminder that football is a fickle mistress. Toulouse dominated possession and looked likely to overturn that early deficit, until all of a sudden Jimmy Briand popped up with a winner (2-1, 82').
With the sun beginning to set and the moon already shining bright, the Girondins raised their eyes to the sky and savoured this derby triumph. An encouraging display of courage and pragmatism from the boys in blue.
