A tight defeat in Paris [1-0]
Girondins narrowly beaten by Ligue 1 leaders
The Girondins slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the Parc des Princes this Friday evening. Edinson Cavani scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot (41').
Paris Saint-Germain set up camp in the Girondins' half early on, creating a series of promising chances. Pablo cleared Thiago Silva's shot off the line (9’), and Edinson Cavani beat Benoît Costil but not the woodwork (21’). Four minutes later Costil pulled off a fantastic snap save to push away a close-range effort from Eric Choupo-Moting (25’).
Jimmy Briand almost put the Girondins in front but he headed Toma Basic's corner wide of the mark (30’). PSG finally took the lead just before the break, thanks to a somewhat dubious penalty won by Thomas Meunier and struck by Edinson Cavani (41’). In fact the Uruguay international struck the ball so hard he seemed to hurt himself.
Bordeaux looked stronger in the second half, with François Kamano curling in a couple of promising efforts. The first one narrowly missed the target (55’), but the second produced a wonderfully acrobatic save from veteran keeper Gianluigi Buffon ! (60’)
Paris seemed content to sit back and protect their lead, and the only other threat came when Sergi Palencia dropped a cross onto Andreas Cornelius' head late on - but the Dane's effort missed the target entirely.
Bordeaux simply could not find an opening, slipping to a narrow defeat at the Parc des Princes.
