A very eventful draw (3-3)
Wildly unpredictable encounter ends Bordeaux 3 - 3 Nîmes
An open, goal-packed game at the Matmut Atlantique ended in a stalemate, but could easily have gone either way.
Before travelling to Prague for their first game of the UEFA Europa League group stage, Bordeaux hosted Nîmes Olympique with every intention of keeping their strong home run going.
The 15,012 fans at the Matmut ATLANTIQUE knew that newly-promoted Nîmes wouldn't be coming here to shut up shop. With an average of 4.5 goals in each of their league games so far this season, the southerners are committed to an open style of play.
But the game got off to a steady start, with the exception of an early attempt which French international Benoît Costil easily covered (4') and a shot over the bar by Lukas Lerager at the other end (7'). After a prudent 15 minutes, the Girondins began to pick up the pace. Younousse Sankharé tested Nîmes keeper (and Bordeaux loanee) Paul Bernardoni with a shot from 35 metres out (18'), and a few minutes later Kamano followed suit (21'). The visitors' best chance came from a set piece, with Renaud Ripart glancing his shot of Benoît Costil's left post (24').
The breakthrough came just two minutes later, when Younousse Sankharé picked out Jimmy Briand inside the box: Briand coolly slotted past the keeper, with a little help from the right post. 1-0 to Bordeaux (26').
The Girondins looked to be in control of this game, but they were caught napping just a few minutes later. Umut Bozok slipped past Maxime Poundjé and teed up Baptiste Guillaume for the equaliser 1-1 (32'). Bordeaux almost took back the lead immediately, but François Kamano's shot scraped off the wrong side of the post (34').
It looked like that was all for the first half, until Antonin Bobichon smashed a rocket of a shot past Benoît Costil just before the whistle. 2-1 to Nîmes (44').
Bordeaux came back for the second half determined to attack, at the risk of leaving themselves exposed at the back. Umut Bozok missed a decent chance, sparking off a counter-attack which allowed Bordeaux to draw level. Sergi Palencia broke free down the right wing and hooked the ball back for Jimmy Briand in the middle. 2-2 (56'). Nîmes looked stunned by this turn of events, and when Samuel Kalu launched a rapid solo run barely a minute later they could only stand by and watch as he smashed past Bernardoni to make it 3-2 Bordeaux (57').
Nîmes threw themselves forward in search of an equaliser, and Plasil saved Bordeaux's lead with a crucial tackle (66'). Ten minutes later, with full time creeping up, Benoît Costil produced an acrobatic save to turn away Antonin Bobichon's shot (77'). Ultimately, the Girondins just couldn't hold on for the full 90 minutes. Umut Bozok managed to find the breach in the Bordeaux defence and make it 3-3 from close range (78').
Both teams were exhausted by their exploits, and it began to show. Jules Koundé headed away another dangerous ball (79'), and up at the other end a communication breakdown between Paul Bernardoni and his defence almost provided an opening for Samuel Kalu (80'). Finally, after an exhausting and unpredictable game, both teams came away with a point.
The Girondins will be back in action this Thursday in Prague.
