An honourable exit [1- 2]

Girondines lose out in Coupe de France semi-final with PSG.

COUPE DE FRANCE FéMININE - Sunday, August 2, 2020 - 23:02

The Girondines were edged out of the cup by PSG this afternoon, losing by two goals to one. In the 24th minute, Katja Snoeijs fired Bordeaux ahead with a cool finish. PSG equalised early in the second half (Paredes, 54') and sealed victory with a late winner (Bruun, 84'). The Girondines exit the delayed cup with their heads held high after a spirited performance.

After the final whistle sounded the girls saluted the restricted crowd permitted to enter Libourne's Stade Jean-Antoine Moueix. The result was a disappointment, of course, but they had given their all in this delayed fixture. Their passion and commitment were exemplary.

And to think that it had all started so well! Katja Snoeijs picked up the ball on the left side of the midfield and charged forward to set up a one-on-one with PSG keeper Endler. Snoeijs left her no chance (1-0).

A few minutes later Vanessa Gilles limped off injured, giving Elena Linari her Bordeaux debut (32'). The rest of the first half was fairly evenly-balanced, with the Girondines keeping the visitors under control and leaving Romane Bruneau with very little to do at the back.

The second half was a very different affair - PSG levelled courtesy of Paredes (55'). Elena Linari had already saved a free kick from Nadim off the line (48'), and another shot had rattled the post. Inès Jaurena intervened to save the Girondines in extremis a few minutes later (64').

With the scores still level, Khadija Shaw fired off a majestic volley which was cruelly kept out by the post (74'). Bordeaux kept on pushing forward, but the decisive moment came courtesy of Bruun, a 79th-minute sub for PSG. Within five minutes she had scored the goal that set Paris on course for the cup final.

The Bordelaises played with spirit and passion this evening, giving their all against an experienced Paris side. The result went against them on the day, but Bordeaux have every right to be proud of their excellent run in the Coupe de France !
