Girondines victorious in first friendly! [1-0]

Bordeaux beat China U19s thanks to a goal from Khadija Shaw !

D1FéMININE - Friday, July 19, 2019 - 11:00

Last Thursday the Girondines took to the field for their first pre-season friendly, just 3 days after returning to training. Their opponents were the China U19 side, a serious challenge so early on in their pre-season preparations. Bordeaux put in a strong performance which bodes very well for the season to come, with Khadija Shaw sealing the victory with her headed goal.

The sun was beating down on Le Haillan and the many spectators who had turned out to watch the Girondines take on China U19, just wrapping up their European tour. Pedro Martinez Losa fielded a team featuring several new recruits.

Romane Bruneau started in goal, with Estelle Cascarino, Julie Thibaut, Vanessa Gilles and Delphine Chatelin in defence, Ghoutia Karchouni, Maëlle Garbino, Camille Surdez and captain Sophie Istillart in midfield, and the brand new pairing of Ouleymata Sarr and Khadija Shaw up front. As this was a friendly, the coach was free to make as many subs as he liked in the second half.

Bordeaux looked solid throughout this match, showing that after just three days of training they are already beginning to adapt to the new manager's style of play. The physical toll of the Chinese side's European tour was beginning to show, and Khadija Shaw ran rings around the defence to create some great chances (26' and 70'). She finally connected with a superb cross from Delphine Chatelin to head the Girondines into the lead (1-0).

Bordeaux's World Cup stars return to training today (Monday 22 July), but the team has already secured its first victory of the (pre)season. Well done ladies !
