A cup upset (0-1)

Girondins knocked out in Coupe de France 3rd round

RéSUMé - Sunday, January 6, 2019 - 19:27

Despite dominating for large spells, the Girondins came unstuck against the oldest football club in France. Le Havre scored the only goal of the game in the 47th minute, and Bordeaux never managed to pull one back. The end of a very short Coupe de France campaign for the Girondins!

The Girondins' Coupe de France campaign lasted all of 47 minutes this year! That was the fateful minute when Assifuah struck, handing Le Havre an advantage which they never surrendred. Not that the Girondins didn't try: from the outset they dominated their opponents, with François Kamano (6'), Jules Koundé (12'), Jimmy Briand (13') and Nicolas De Préville (18') all coming close.

Toma Basic tested Thuram on several occasions (25' and 36'), but Bordeaux would soon come to rue these wasted chances when Le Havre took the home defence by surprise.

The last half hour was frantic as the Girondins sought to bounce back. Yann Karamoh (72'), Andreas Cornelius (66') and Valentin Vada (86') all came on as subs, but the visitors' defence (and the scoreline) refused to budge.
