TRANSFERTS - Wednesday, August 9, 2017 - 14:30

It is our great pleasure to introduce the Girondins’ latest recruit: Jonathan Renato Barbosa. The Brazilian winger joins us from Ludogorets, and has signed a 4-year deal.

Jonathan Renato Barbosa is officially a Bordeaux player! The Brazilian has successfully completed his medical examination, and put pen to paper on a contract which will keep him with the club until June 2021.

Jonathan Renato Barbosa, better known as Jonathan Cafú, is a Brazilian forward born on 10th July 1991 in Piracicaba, São Paulo state. A multi-talented forward with great pace and ball control, he can play on the wing or up front.

He began his professional career in 2011 at Boavista Sport Club, making his debut in Brazil’s top flight at the age of 20 in a game against Carioca.

The following year, in January 2012, Jonathan Cafú signed for XV de Piracicaba. He made 8 appearances in the Paulista A1, the São Paulo regional league, and picked up valuable experience during a 4-month loan spell with Capivariano FC. By May 2013 he was back with XV de Piracicaba, making 13 more appearances in the Paulista A1.

Cafú's big breakthrough came at Ponte Preta, where he became an established first-team player and started to make a name for himself. After joining the club on 31st March 2014, he scored 6 goals and delivered 6 assists in 32 appearances in Serie B.

After this successful season, Cafú moved to São Paulo FC in January 2015. That season he played nine games in the Paulista A1, two in Serie A and one in the Copa Libertadores. In the latter he came on as a late sub for Michel Bastos, scoring São Paulo’s fourth goal against Uruguayan opponents Danubio FC.

In the summer transfer window that year he swapped Brazil for Bulgaria, joining Ludogorets. He made 27 appearances in all competitions in the 2015-2016 season, including 24 in the Bulgarian Parva Liga. He scored 8 goals that season, as well as providing 3 assists. And the next season was better still! Last season he scored 10 and set up 10 in 23 league appearances.

2016-2017 also saw Cafú’s debut in European competition, with two goals and two assists in the six games of the Champions League group stage. He also featured in Ludogorets’ two Europa League games.

The 2017-2018 season is already underway for Ludogorets, and Jonathan Cafú has already played four Champions League qualifiers and one league game.

A multi-talented winger who can also play up front, Jonathan Renato Barbosa is fast, incisive and comfortable on the ball, with a power which belies his diminutive stature (173cm and 64 kg). Cafu can’t wait to put those talents to good use in Bordeaux!

The Girondins de Bordeaux are delighted to have signed Jonathan Renato Barbosa for the next four seasons. We wish this promising young player every success in blue and white.
