CLUB - Friday, March 8, 2019 - 21:49
Paulo Sousa has signed a 3-year deal with the Girondins, taking charge of the first team with immediate effect.
Paulo Sousa, full name Paulo Manuel Carvalho de Sousa, was born on 30th August 1970 in Viseu, Portugal.
My vision for Bordeaux, as with all the clubs where I've worked, is to create and nurture a philosophy and a style of play which reflect the club's history while also pointing the way to the future.
Originally an elegant midfield playmaker, Paulo turned to management after a glittering playing career. After making his professional debut with Benfica, that career took him to Juventus Turin, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Parma, in which time he won the Champions League twice as well as winning league titles in both Portugal and Italy along with various domestic trophies. He also won 51 caps for his country, playing in EURO 96, EURO 2000 and the World Cup in 2002.
Upon retiring as a player in 2002 Paulo set out to learn his trade as a professional coach, with spells at Swansea, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, FC Basel and Fiorentina. As a manager he has won a string of domestic honours: the Israeli Championship in 2014, the Swiss League in 2015 and the Hungarian League Cup and SUpercup, twice.
After a season in China with Tianjin Quanjian FC, he now joins the Girondins until June 2022.
We are firmly convinced that Paulo Sousa is the man to give our fans what they want to see when they come to the stadium, and to achieve the ambitious targets which we've set for him.
The club is proud to announce the arrival of Paulo Sousa as our new manager. Welcome Paulo!
