Narrow defeat in Marseille [1-0]

Girondins beaten in close-run encounter at the Vélodrome

The Girondins' winning run came to an end in Marseille, thanks to a solitary goal from Thauvin in the 35th minute. After a very defensive first half, Bordeaux created more chances in the second period. In vain. Benoît Costil pulled off four superb saves to keep us in the game, but OM gave nothing away. The Girondins end the weekend in 8th place.

This game is one of the historic highlights of the French footballing calendar. Un classique. Two historic clubs, and two highly-motivated sets of players. Marseille dominated the early possession in front of their home crowd, but Bordeaux left them little space to work with. Benoît Costil pulled off three huge saves, and Nicolas De Préville cleared off the line to deny Germain an early goal (22’).

Around the half-hour mark, Gaëtan Laborde headed wide at the other end. So far the Girondins had been calm and collected in defence, waiting for an opportunity to break. Marseille had nothing to show for all their possession in midfield, but the breakthrough finally came from a set piece. Thauvin headed the hosts in front from a corner (35’, 1-0). Gaëtan Laborde almost responded immedaiately at the other end, but Pelé caught his header on the line (39’).

Gus Poyet decided to shake things up early in the 2nd half, bringing on François Kamano for Nicolas De Préville (52’). Benoît Costil produced another spectacular save to deny Sanson. A few minutes later it took a superb tackle from Otavio to deny OM another goal. Martin Braithwaite was sent on to replace Otavio and offer another attacking option for the last 20 minutes.

Bordeaux were dominating possession now, but time was ticking away. Malcom's shot was wide of the mark (80’). Diego Contento came on (briefly) for Théo Pellenard. The Girondins kept on pushing for that equaliser, while Benoît Costil had time to produce two more fantastic saves: one from Sanson's long-range effort (90+2), then another to stop Gustavo's last-ditch attempt (90+3).

Game over: the Girondins' winning run came to an end with a narrow defeat at the hands of their old enemies Olympique de Marseille.

Reactions after OM-FCGB

Soualiho Meïté spoke to journalists after the game

The Girondins de Bordeaux's No. 10 spoke to Canal Plus after the narrow defeat in Marseille (1-0).

Speaking to Canal Plus journalist Laurent Paganelli immediately after the game, the midfielder offered his take on the game.

The first question concerned Bordeaux's strategy for the game, which seemed to consist of "waiting to strike on the counter, rather than creating chances more directly."

Soualiho Meïté: "No defence is perfect, I think we could have done more to challenge them. But despite all our preparation, and the video analysis we did, they came out on top tonight."

But he also had time to pay tribute to the positive impact of new boss Gus Poyet.

Soualiho Meïté: "Having a new coach come in has been good for us. He's given us that extra edge, and helped to get us back on the right path. But, as you can see from tonight, there are still things we need to work on. We should never have conceded that goal! It's put an end to our winning run, but it won't stop our momentum. Marseille are a very strong team, we knew that. They play good football, they like to dominate possession, and that's what they did tonight. But I still think we could have coutner-attacked more, had more shots on goal. We weren't accurate enough in the final third."

We put up a good fight, but we were missing that little something special tonight

In his post-match press conference, Gus Poyet reflected on this defeat.
